About Willy Guhl
Willy Guhl (1915–2004) was a pioneering Swiss industrial designer and a leading figure in modernist design. Known for his minimalist and functional approach, Guhl’s work emphasized the harmony between form and practicality. After studying at the Kunstgewerbeschule Zürich, he became a professor at the same institution, influencing generations of designers.
Guhl is perhaps best known for his collaboration with Eternit AG, where he explored innovative uses of fibre cement, a material made from cement reinforced with asbestos fibres. His most iconic designs, such as the Loop Chair and the Handkerchief Planter (1950s), reflect his skill in creating lightweight, durable, and sculptural forms suitable for outdoor use.
